So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me 12.” Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely. “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.” The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sunburnt,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?” “Yes,” she answered shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!” “That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet. Of course, she’s only three...” “I’m four,” the child said proudly. “I’ll be four and a half.” Harry turned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said. “ But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?” “Er, well,” the woman looked at the child. “I mean... she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four. ” “A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs ---let me see... 13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe 1.50. The law is the law, but since the fault (過錯(cuò)) is mine---” The woman stood up, took the child’s hand and left the office. 1. The woman was angry because ____________. A. she couldn’t use the ticket for her round trip B. she had to return home a day earlier than she had planned C. she spent more money than she had expected D. Harry had sold her a ticket to Jersey where there was no sailing 2. Harry was worried because ___________. A. the woman was angry with him B. he had not done his work properly C. the Jersey timetable was wrong D. the little girl didn’t have a return ticket 3. Harry started talking to the little girl __________. A. because he was in difficulty and did not know what to do B. because he had a little girl about the same age as this girl C. because he wanted to be friendly to the little girl who looked so nice D. when he suddenly realized that he could find a way out from the little girl 4. When Harry said, “The law is the law, but since the fault was mine...,”he meant that __________. A. they must follow it without other choices, even though the fault was his B. he had to be strict with the woman because of the law, although he didn’t C. the woman had to pay him 1.50 and the railway would pay for the hotel D. she should pay 1.50, but as he had made a mistake, she could go without paying. B Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time. Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience. E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before e-mail became such a practical tool. The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun, see a great movie perhaps, and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may be tired of telling the story. With e-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think who might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience. E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college. We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t get rid of any of the old ways. 5. The purpose of this passage is to ___________. A. explain how to use the Internet B. describe the writer’s joy of keeping up with the latest technology C. tell the advantages and usefulness of the Internet D. introduce the reader the basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet 6. The use of e-mail has made it possible for the writer to ____________. A. spend less time working B. have more time with his child C. work at home on weekends D. work at a speed comfortable to him 7. According to the writer, e-mail has an obvious advantage over the telephone because the former(前者) helps one _____________. A. reach a group of people at one time conveniently B. keep one’s communication as personal as possible C. pass on much more information than the latter D. get in touch with one’s friends faster than the latter 8. The best title for this passage is _________. A. Computer: new technological advances B. Internet:new tool to maintain good friendship C. Computers have made life easier D. Internet: a convenient tool for communication C The concept (概念) of good manners is quite different when we compare different cultures, values and ways of living. In my opinion, going to a restaurant in Brazil will rarely (很少) be an embarrassing situation. One good way to figure out the rules is to pay attention, in a discrete (不連續(xù)) way, to the people who are eating close to you. There are some basic and necessary rules of etiquette (禮貌) that Brazilians usually respect every day. They are: ● Being on time is polite, but is not a strict rule in Brazil. Being late for up to 15 minutes probably will not make a Brazilian angry. ●When you go to a restaurant, be careful to greet the people who work at the place, and don’t forget to greet the people who are already waiting for you at the table. It’s not necessary to hug and kiss everybody if they are already seated. ●You can ask somebody about how the food is prepared and also about prices or tips if you are not sure about them. ●You should never talk to another person while you still have some food in your mouth. Probably he or she is not interested in what is happening in it. ●Making noise while eating is also considered really rude. Avoid doing it. ●Be careful not to put your elbows on the table while eating. It is not terrible, but it can be considered a little bit rude by those people who are formal. ●Don’t worry about the time. Usually people in Brazil stay seated for a long time, especially when they have interesting things to talk about. ●It’s not necessary to talk in a really low voice because Latin people usually talk a little loudly. ●Finally, saying “thank you” and “bye” is always very well seen in Brazil. 9. What is the passage mainly about? A. People’s ways of living. B. Values of life in Brazil. C. Basic rules of etiquette. D. Table manners in Brazil. 10. What should you do if you are invited to a restaurant? A. Hug the people who work at the place B. Kiss those who are at the table C. Greet those who are waiting for you D. Say hello to everyone in it. 11. According to the passage, it is considered bad manners __________ at table. A. to ask about the price of the dishes B. not to know about the tips C. to speak with your mouth full of food D. to talk to another person at table D A recent online poll (民意調(diào)查) asked kids what they hated most about school. “Classes are boring” came in first. “Too much homework” was a close second. Since all activities remain interesting for only so long, too much homework can lead to boredom. So, why are some kids getting homework overload? Teachers give two reasons. First, they say, the government now requires schools to meet higher-than-ever achievement goals for students. If students don’t succeed, the school faces punishment. Second, many parents want their children to be able to get into the best colleges and universities. These parents believe homework is a way to make sure that students are learning as much as possible. People who favor homework argue that it can have many beneficial effects. They claim it can help students develop good study habits. Homework can help students recognize that learning can occur at home as well as at school. It can help develop their independent learning and responsible character traits (性格特征) . But studies show that middle school students doing 60 to 90 minutes of homework a night are doing just as well in school as those doing more than 90 minutes. And homework can have negative effects. Homework can deny students access to leisure (休閑) activities that also teach important skills. For example, sports teams teach cooperation and leadership, in addition to helping kids stay physically active. Another problem with too much homework is that parents can get too involved. They can put too much pressure on their kids. So what should be done? Good homework assignments in the proper amount will have positive effects. Too much homework, however, will have negative effects. The bottom line: Students in grades three through six should do no more than 30 to 60 minutes of homework each night. 12. According to Paragraph 2, the kids are given much homework because ____________. A . A. schools are evaluated in terms of students’ achievements B. the government doesn’t take the problem seriously C. it is a good way to improve the students’ ability D. time will be made full use of in this way 13. Those who are in favor of homework think that _____________.D A. homework helps students to succeed B. homework helps children to learn independently C. it’s good for kids to help each other in learning D. parents are a great help when kids do homework at home 14. Which of the following is NOT a negative effect of too much homework?B A. Kids have little time to do leisure activities. B. There is a lack of sleeping time. C. The chances of learning other skills are lost. D. Kids are under pressure from their parents. 15. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is __________. D A. to criticize the school teachers B. to attract public attention to kids’ study C. to offer more help to today’s kids D. to call for proper amounts of homework Public Speaking Training ● Get a coach 16 , so get help. Since there are about a billion companies out there all ready to offer you public speaking training and courses, here are some things to look for when deciding the training that’s right for you. ● Focus on positives Any training you do to become more effective at public speaking should always focus on the positive aspects of what you already do well. Nothing can hurt confidence more than being told that you aren’t doing well. 17 , so good public speaking training should develop those instead of telling you what you shouldn’t do. ● 18 If you find a public speaking course that looks as though it’s going to give you lots of dos and don’ts, walk away! Your brain is so full of what you’re going to be talking about. 19 As far as we’re concerned, there are basically no hard and fast rules about public speaking. Your audience can be your friends. ● You are a special person not a clone Most importantly, good public speaking training should treat you as a special one, with your own personal habits. 20 Your training course should help you bring out your personality, not try to turn you into someone you’re not. A. You aren’t like anybody else B. You already do lots of things well C. Turn your back on too many rules D. Check the rules about dos and don’ts E. Whatever the presentation, public speaking is tough F. The one thing you don’t want is for them to fall asleep G. So trying to force a whole set of rules into it will just make things worse It was a summer’s evening and I went to the English corner.
