第六天 一.美文晨讀 The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while they sit around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves. Opportunity is the same way. It is everywhere. Opportunity is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet opportunity alone is not enough to create success. Opportunity must be seized and acted upon in order to have value. So many people are so anxious to "get in on the ground floor" of opportunity, as if the opportunity will do all the work. Thats impossible. Just as you need air to breathe, you need opportunity to succeed. It takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity, however. You must make use of that opportunity. Thats not up to the opportunity. Thats up to you. It doesnt matter what "floor" the opportunity is on. What matters is what you do with it. 二.詞匯訓(xùn)練 1. These books b______ to me. 2. We had been travelled for 3 hours after someone appeared selling food and drinks. It was darkness all the time. We were crossing Wales, so we could see nothing through the windows. When we finally arrived Holyhead, nearly everyone was slept. As soon as the train stopped, everybody come to life, grabbing their suitcases and rushed onto the platform. 四.閱讀理解 A If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因)engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(傳送)electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news, etc. . I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen. 1. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Best Way to Get News B. The Changes of Media C. Make Your Own Newspaper D. The Future of Newspaper 2. In the writer’s opinion, in the future,_____. A. more big political affairs, wars and disasters will make news B. newspapers will not be printed in publishing houses any longer C. newspapers will cover more scientific research D. more and more people will watch TV 3. From the passage, we can infer____. A. newspapers will win the competition among the different media B. newspapers will stay with us together with other media C. television will take the place of newspaper D. the writer believes some media will die out 4. The phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means____. A. depend on B. compete with C. fight with D. kill off B Let us say there is something you don’t know how to do. In the past if you were determined to learn, you might have called a friend or relative, taken a night class or walked down to the local library for a research term. But now a host of websites are springing up to provide free practical advice on these subjects and actually anything else you can think of. In one sense, these“how-to”sites represent(表明)a part of the growing world of online learning. This tradition found one of its earliest forms in the FAQs or Frequently Asked Questions files—that began on Usenet, the Internet’s global discussion group. These FAQs, many of which still circulate(go round continuously), took a specific subject and explained it to complete novices. But “how-to”sites take the FAQs idea in a somewhat different direction by addressing subjects that aren’t necessarily related to discussion forums(論壇). These sites take the style of a written tutorial(teaching period)and a tone of friendly advice. Possibly the biggest and best known of these sites is learn 2. com(www. learn2. com). It offers nearly 1, 000 free tutorials and adds new ones frequently for a job interview. At ehow. com(www. ehow. com)you can learn how to train for your first marathon, how to buy a vacation home, or how to make a movie in eight steps. 5. The purpose of writing the passage is to____. A. introduce new websites to people B. teach how to take new courses on the Internet C. present new means to learn something you want to know D. help you to solve any difficulty you meet with 6. “How-to” sites are set up to____. A. explain FAQs to the public B. help people to learn what they want to C. tell the difference from discussion forums D. complete the growing world of online learning 7. The underlined word “novices” in the passage probably means____. A. experts who know a lot B. hosts of “how-to” sites C. people without knowledge D. beginners of “how-to” Sites C Do you always forget where you placed your keys or your purse? What was the name of the movie you saw last week? The major cause of your forgetfulness may be linked to what you store in your body, not in your short-term memory bank. Tests continue to show that people with enough Vitamin B2 do well in memory exams. The “B” could stand for “brain”, if you’re one of many with limited instant recall. And the number one source of that vitamin is sunflower seeds. Even when you’re sleeping or relaxing, your brain is still at work. Although it makes up just two percent of your total body weight, it uses up to 30% of the calories you take in each day. For it to work properly, it must be fed. Even if you’re not a breakfast eater, that meal is the best way to prepare your brain for the day. A quick and easy English muffin with peanut and butter in it, a glass of milk, and an orange, might be what your brain may be asking you the first thing in the morning when you feel your head is in a fog. Having sunflower seeds and fruit between meals adds more muscle to that hungry, demanding organ. Vitamin B1 also helps the memory, and that is found in eggs, meat and nuts. In Chinese culture, walnuts(核桃)are known as the fruit for a long life because it is believed that they feed both the kidneys and the brain. And according to Chinese culture, if you keep those two important organs in good working order, you’ll live longer. However forgetful you are, just keep in mind the letter “B”, which will help you to “bear in mind almost everything” even on those days when life’s challenges are sending you in a billion directions. 8. The underlined word “muffin” in the third paragraph probably means____. A. menu B. dinner C. calory D. cookie 9. In the passage, Chinese culture is mentioned to____. A. support the idea of long life B. show the importance of Vitamin B1 C. warn the readers of two organs D. remind us of walnuts and sunflower seeds 10. What can we conclude from the passage? A. What we eat seems more important than what we learn in terms of memory. B. Two percent of our brain is still active when we are sleeping or relaxing. C. It doesn’t make much difference to our brain whether we have breakfast or not. D. Life’s challenges have no effect on our memory, if dealt with in a proper way. 11. The best title for the passage could be____. A. Causes of Memory Loss B. Vitamin B2 and Memory C. Forgetful? But not Brain D. Chinese Culture of Long Life 五.翻譯句子 1.
