111 The Third Period The General Idea of This Period In this period we’re going to learn the reading passage in detail. Teaching Aims 1. Learn and master the following words and expressions: source, accessible, consist of, become known as, go down, come up with, web browser, create, work as, from that moment on  2. Master the following sentence patterns: (1) They created a network of computers called DARPANET. (2) Berners-Lee built his first computer while he was at university using an old television.  (3) Berners-Lee made it possible for everyone to use the Internet. Teaching Important Points 1. Improve the students’ reading ability. 2. Master the usage of some words and phrases. Teaching Difficult Point How to use the key words, phrases and sentences correctly. Teaching Methods 1. Revision method to consolidate the vocabulary. 2. Explanation and practice methods to make sure the students master the use of the words, expressions and sentences. Teaching Aids 1. a tape recorder  2. a slide projector Teaching Procedures Step 1 Greetings 　 Greet the whole class as usual. Step 2 Revision and Consolidation 　 Additional activity Steps Content of the activity 1 Have the students practise syllable stress by grouping the words according to where the stress falls. 2 Ask the students to group the words individually. 3 Put the students in pairs to compare their answers. 4 Call back the answers from the class. The teacher gets four students to give their answers: First syllable: army, data, lecturer, military, network, scientist, system, browser Second syllable: accessible, consist, create, defence, develop, majority, percentage Third syllable: academic, university Fourth syllable: communication, millionaire, organisation Step 3 Presentation Language points: 　 1....and it’s accessible through a computer.因特網(wǎng)很容易通過電腦進(jìn)入。 accessible adj.(場所)容易到達(dá)的;(事物)易到手的;(人)易接近的 e. g. Dictionaries should be put where they will be easily accessible. 字典應(yīng)該放在容易取閱的地方。 Our principal is accessible to the students. 我們校長容易和學(xué)生親近。 2.It consists of millions of pages of data. 因特網(wǎng)由千百萬頁數(shù)據(jù)組成。 consist of (= be made up of)由……組成,由……構(gòu)成 e. g. Coal consists mostly of carbon.  煤大部分由碳組成。 This club consists of more than 200 members.  這個俱樂部由200位以上的成員組成。 3. It then became possible for universities to use the system as well. 后來許多大學(xué)也使用這個網(wǎng)絡(luò)。 as well(as)意思是“也,又”。 e. g. He knows German as well.他也懂德文。 The child is lively as well as healthy.  這孩子既健康又活潑。 4. They created a network of computers called DARPANET.  他們創(chuàng)建了一個叫DARPANET 的電腦網(wǎng)絡(luò)。 短語 called DARPANET 是過去分詞短語,在句中充當(dāng)定語,相當(dāng)于一個定語從句。 e. g. a boy called Li Ping 一個名叫李平的男孩 a website called. .. 一個名叫……的網(wǎng)站 5. At the moment, about 80% of web traffic is in English, but this percentage is going down.  目前大約80% 的網(wǎng)絡(luò)通信業(yè)務(wù)都是用英語,但是這一比率正在下降。 (1)at the moment (用于現(xiàn)在時態(tài)中)此刻;(用于過去時態(tài)中)那時 e. g. I am (was) busy at the moment.  我此刻(當(dāng)時)很忙。 短語拓展: for the moment 暫時 e. g. Stop discussing for the moment, please.請暫停討論。 in a moment 立刻,立即  e. g. I’ll come in a moment.  我馬上就來。 the moment (= as soon as)  一……就…… e. g. The enemy plane was shot down the moment it intruded into our air space. 這架敵機(jī)一侵入我國領(lǐng)空就被擊落。 (2) tracffic 這里意為“電信”“通信業(yè)務(wù)”。 (3) percentage  ①百分?jǐn)?shù),百分率　  the lowest percentage 最低的百分比 ②比例  e. g. A large percentage of people came.  大部分人來了。 6. Berners-Lee built his first computer while he was at university using an old television.貝爾納斯·李在上大學(xué)期間就創(chuàng)建了他的第一臺電腦,使用的是一臺舊電腦。 using an old television 為現(xiàn)在分詞短語作方式狀語。 7. He came up with the idea of the World Wide Web in 1989 while he was working in Switzerland.  1989年他在瑞士工作時就提出創(chuàng)建萬維網(wǎng)的想法。 come up with 提出,想出(看法/觀點(diǎn)/建議等) come up with a proposal 提出建議 come up with a response 作出反應(yīng) 8. Berners-Lee made it possible for everyone to use the Internet.  貝爾納斯·李使每個人使用因特網(wǎng)成為可能。 句型結(jié)構(gòu)為:主語+動詞+it+用作賓語補(bǔ)足語的形容詞(或名詞)+不定式短語。常用于這個句型的動詞有:find, feel, think, consider, make等。 e. g. As he is an old friend of mine, I find it difficult to refuse him. 由于他是我的老朋友,我覺得很難拒絕他。 Do you think it necessary to say a few words at the meeting? 你認(rèn)為有必要在會上講幾句話嗎？ He feels it his duty to help others. 他感到幫助別人是他的責(zé)任。 9. Within five years, the number of Internet users rose from 600 000 to 40 million. 五年內(nèi),因特網(wǎng)使用者的數(shù)量從60萬上升到4000萬。 the number of “……的數(shù)量”,后接復(fù)數(shù)名詞時,謂語動詞要用單數(shù)形式; a mumber of “許多,大量 ”,后接復(fù)數(shù)名詞時,謂語動詞要用復(fù)數(shù)形式。 e. g. The number of the pages of this book is 300. 這本書的頁數(shù)為三百頁。 A number of new products have been successfully trial-produced.  許多新產(chǎn)品已試制成功。 Step 4 Reading aloud 　 The teacher asks the students to read the passage aloud and underline the words, phrases and sentences which they don’t understand. Step 5 Summary and Homework 　 T: Well, in this class we’ve had a careful reading of the text and I’ve explained the key language points to you. I hope you will read the text again and again and try your best to recite the reading passage. And this is also your homework. So much for today.
