So, with what would be her last __17__, she calmly answers “Yes, I believe in God.” As you may have guessed, the event I’m describing took place last Tuesday in Littleton, Colorado. As the Washington Post __18__, the two students who shot 13 people, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, did not choose their victims at random(隨意)—they were __19__ out of ugly prejudices(偏見(jiàn)). Media coverage has focused on the killers’ hostility(敵意) toward racial minorities and athletes, but there was another group the pair __20__ every bit as much, if not more: Christians. And, there were plenty of them to hate at Columbine High School. According to some __21__ eight Christians—four Evangelicals and four Catholics—were killed. Among them was Cassia Bernall. And it was Cassia who made the dramatic __22__ I’ve just described —fitting for a person whose __23__ movie was Brave Heart, in which the hero dies a martyr’s(殉教的) death. Cassia was a 17-year-old junior with long blond hair that she wanted to __24__ and have made into wigs(假發(fā)) for cancer patients who had lost their hair through chemotherapy(化療). She was __25__ in her youth group at West Pool’s Community Church and was known for carrying a Bible to school. Cassia was in the school library reading her Bible when the two young killers __26__ . According to witnesses, one of the killers pointed his gun at Cassia and asked, “Do you believe in God?” Cassia __27__ and then answered, “Yes, I believe in God.” “Why?” the gunman asked. Villagers living on the sides of Merapi believe that there are violent mysterious spirits living on the mountain top. They believe the volcano keeper has the power to speak to the spirits. So his job is to appease (安撫) the spirits of the mountain by bringing them gifts. And Mbah Maridjan, an 85-year-old man, was a keeper of the volcano. When Merapi became restless in 2006 the government ordered people living in the villages nearby to leave their homes. According to a report from The New York Times, Maridjan, the mysterious keeper of the volcano, refused to leave. His heroism made him a celebrity. He appeared in a TV advertisement for an energy drink. But Maridjan’s luck ran out when Merapi erupted in October, 2010.His burnt body was found in his house. He was kneeling in prayer (祈禱). Some 29 others died as well. It was said that some were following his example. Maridjan’s death has caused a debate between superstition (迷信) and science, according to The New York Times. Surono, an Indonesian volcanologist, told The New York Times: “The lesson from Mbah Maridjan is, when it comes to volcanoes, abandon superstition and believe in science. You must respect nature.” Volcanoes are terrible. I once flew over Mount St Helens, a volcano in the Northwest Pacific region of the United States. It had erupted nine years earlier with serious consequences: 57 people died; thousands of deer, bears, dogs, cows and fish disappeared; hundreds of homes were destroyed. We could still see the trail (痕跡) of destruction from our plane. Most people would escape as quickly as possible if a nearby volcano erupted. I know I would. So Maridjan, the keeper of Mount Merapi, must have been a brave as well as a holy man. But I can’t help thinking that a dozen victims died for trying to persuade him to leave the mountain. 28. How does the volcano keeper appease the spirits of the mountain? (No more than 4 words) ________________________________________________________________________ 29. How many people died when Merapi erupted in October, 2010? (No more than 3 words) ________________________________________________________________________ 30. A。 8.A It’s time for sth.“是…… It’s time for sb. to do sth.“某人該做某事的時(shí)間了。” not only位于句首時(shí)主謂要倒裝,因此該句子中的主語(yǔ)teachers’ energy與謂語(yǔ)was saved要用倒裝語(yǔ)序。 shy and cautious意為“害羞的與謹(jǐn)慎的”;sensitive and thoughtful意為“敏感的與體貼的”;honest and confident意為“誠(chéng)實(shí)的與自信的”; light-h(huán)earted and optimistic意為“無(wú)憂無(wú)慮的與樂(lè)觀的”。 掌握短語(yǔ)make great efforts to do sth.,如果將其變成被動(dòng)語(yǔ)態(tài)即為great efforts must be made。 give an impression on/upon給…… 16.A 聯(lián)系下文“Yes, I believe in God.” 其他選項(xiàng)中,care for照顧,喜歡;fight against與……戰(zhàn)斗; rely on依靠。 Cassia did not have a chance to respond. The gunman had already shot her dead. 18.A 聯(lián)系空前的the Washington Post我們知道,《華盛頓郵報(bào)》對(duì)此事進(jìn)行了報(bào)道。 23.A 聯(lián)系下文in which the hero dies a martyr’s(殉教的) death,我們知道,因?yàn)椤队赂业男摹返闹魅斯珵榻塘x而死,與自己有同樣的信仰,因此這是她最喜歡的電影。 24.C 聯(lián)系空后的have made into wigs for cancer patients我們知道,她把自己的頭發(fā)留起來(lái),以準(zhǔn)備將來(lái)把它剪下來(lái)留給癌癥病人。dress up裝扮,打扮;put up 舉起,張貼,建立;make smart弄整潔。 25.A 因?yàn)樗泻苌畹淖诮绦叛觯俾?lián)系空后的at West Pool’s Community Church我們知道,她在教會(huì)是非常積極活躍的。 Ⅲ.28.By bringing them gifts. 29.About 30 people. 30.Abandon superstition, believe in science and respect nature. 31.He was brave and holy but the action isn’t worth it. 111- 1.
