I didn’t pay attention when Kevin rushed up the stairs with the hurt on his face. About 20 minutes later, as I was walking upstairs I heard Kevin crying inside the bathroom. I knocked on the door and asked, “Hey Kevin, do you want to talk?” No response. I tried again, “Why don’t you e out of there?” Again, no response. So, joking around, I grabbed a stack of index cards and a pencil and wrote, “If you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other.” An hour later I was still sitting on the floor outside the bathroom with two stacks of index cards in front of me. One was blank and one was card from Kevin on which he had translated all his yucky feelings into words for me. As I read one of Kevin’s notes, tears came to my eyes. It said, “Nobody in this family cares about me. I’m not the youngest, and I’m not the oldest, and I’m not talented. Tommy thinks I’m stupid and Dad wishes he had the other Kevin as a kid because he’s better at basketball. And you’re never around to even notice me.” Tears came to my eyes again as I wrote back to him. “You know Kevin, I really do love you and I’m sorry I don’t always show it. I am here for you and you are loved in this family.” There was no response for a while, but then I heard a tearing sound ing from inside the bathroom. Kevin, who had run out of index cards wrote on a torn-up paper cup, “Thanks.” I wrote back “For what?” It returned to me with “Loving me” written on it. Since then, I try my best never to half-notice my family members any more. Kevin and I have closer relationship now, and sometimes when one of us notices that the other is upset we’ll smile and say “Write it on a paper cup.” 1. Why did Kevin stay inside the bathroom alone crying? A. Because he lost in the fight with Tommy. B. Because the author didn’t help him win Tommy. C. Because he felt no love from the family members. D. Because he hurt him when rushing up the stairs. 2. The underlined word “yucky” in the sixth paragraph most probably means “ ”. A. unpleasant B. exciting C. doubtful D. frightening 3. B When you think about math, you probably don’t think about breaking the law, solving mysteries or finding criminals. But a mathematician in Maryland does, and he has e up with mathematical tools to help police find crooks(騙子). People who solve crimes look for patterns that might reveal the identity of the criminal. It’s long been believed, for example, that crooks will break the law closer to where they live, simply because it’s easier to get around in their own neighborhood. If the police see a pattern of robberies in a certain area, they may look for a suspect who lives near the crime scenes. So the farther away from the area a similar crime takes place, the less likely it is that the same criminal did it. But Mike O’Leary, of Towson University in Maryland, says that this kind of approach may be too simple. He says that police may get better clues to the location of an offender’s home base by bining these patterns with a city’s layout and historical crime records. Records of past crimes contain geographical information, and can reveal easy targets—that is, the kinds of stores that might be less difficult to rob. Because these stores are along roads, the locations of past crimes contain information about where major streets and crossroads are. O’Leary is writing a new puter program that will quickly provide this kind of information for a given city. His program also includes a census(人口普查) of the people who live in the city, and information about how a criminal’s patterns change with age. Other puter programmers have worked on similar software, but O’Leary uses more math. The mathematician plans to make his puter program available, free of charge, to the police departments around the country. The program is just one way to use math to fight crime. O’Leary says that criminology—the study of crime and criminals—contains a lot of good math problems. “It’s a lot of fun,” he says. 5. What’s the purpose of Mike O’Leary’s new puter program? A. To carry out a census to get detailed information about a given city. B. To analyze the connection between math and criminology. C. To let people know how likely it is that they will bee victims of crime. D. To aid the police in solving criminal cases more quickly and easily. 6. People once believed that criminals live near the scenes of their crimes because . A. it’s easy for them to uncover crime clues B. people tend to mit crimes against their neighbors C. they were likely to mit crimes in areas they knew D. robberies tend to be concentrated in certain areas 7. O’Leary’s new puter program includes the following information EXCEPT . A. the people who live in the city B. the ways that the police use to find crooks C. where major streets and intersections are D. how a criminal’s patterns change over time 8. What do we learn about Mike O’Leary from the text? A. He is a mathematician and criminologist at Towson University. B. His new puter program will generate record profits. C. He can really bines research with pleasure. D. He is the first man to make use of math to help the police. 9. Which of the following would be the BEST title for the text? A. The Value of Math B.
