A Dear Sir, I have to travel every day from Souk Road to the airport. Two buses travel along their route: the number 49 and number 16. But by the time the number 16 bus reaches Souk Road it is always full, so I can’t get on it. I have to wait for the number 49, because sometimes there are empty seats on it. The timetable says that there are buses from Souk Road to the airport every ten minutes. If this is so, why do I have to wait half an hour for a bus nearly every day? The regulations (規(guī)章) say that if there are empty seats on a bus, the bus must stop at every stop where people are waiting. Why do the half-empty buses go straight past me when I am standing at the bus stop? The regulations say that no bus may carry more than 40 seated passengers and 20 standing passengers. Yesterday I was the first to get off the bus when it reached the airport. I counted the other passengers as they got off. There were 129 of them. It is clear that our bus panies break the regulations and think little of their passengers. Can nothing be done to make your service better? Yours, Tired passenger 1. The writer has to take Bus No. 49 because______. A. it arrives on time B. it is not always full C. it travels faster D. it has fewer seats on it 2. The regulations say that each bus may carry ______ passengers at most. A. 20 B. 40 C. 60 D. 129 3. From the passage we can infer that the writer of the letter is probably ______. A. an airport worker B. a bus driver C. a very tired traveler D. an English teacher 4. What kind of letter is this passage? A. It’s a letter of thanks. B. It’s a letter of apology. C. It’s a letter of introduction. D. It’s a letter of plaint. B One morning in midsummer, I headed out to have a good time by myself on the paths of Fontenelle Forest in Bellevue Nebraska. It was a typically warm and wet summer day in Nebraska. The bugs were everywhere: mosquitoes, flies, bees, you name it. I followed the stream path, which made its way through four-foot high grass. I tried to enjoy the beautiful scenery but had to constantly fan away the bugs in front of my face. I grew increasingly upset. Eventually being angry with the bugs, I stopped and waved my arms all round while turning around in a circle. At the very moment, I saw what I had missed the moment before. It seems that a deer had been hidden in the tall grass just one foot away from where I stood. I missed it because of my concentration on the bugs. When I was ready to watch it, the deer was forced to abandon its spot. It leaped in the air right before my eyes and rushed off for better cover. It was too late. I missed it. Now I was attentive and ready to see what was around me, but the sight that might have been seen was gone. I missed the enjoyment of being so close to wildlife! Immediately I wondered what else I was missing, and not just there on the path. I wondered how the bothersome bugs of my life kept me from noticing really important stuff. Maybe it is very useful for my life. This has bee a life lesson that I’ve remembered often. It’s affected my visits with my grandma, the time alone with my husband, and get-together with friends. I’ve learned from my mistake. 5. The author went to Fontenelle Forest to __________. A. get close to wildlife B. explore the paths C. search for deer D. enjoy herself 6. How did the author probably feel when she missed the deer? A. Surprised. B. Cheerful. C. Regretful. D. Pleased. 7. What does the underlined word “stuff” in the last paragraph mean? A. Things. B. Problems. C. Lessons. D. Moments. 8. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To describe an unusual experience. B. To tell us a serious mistake she made. C. To share a lesson she learned. D. To show her dislike for bugs. C Low-Cost Gifts for Mothers Day Gift No. 1 Offer to be your mother’s health friend. Promise to be there for any and all doctor’s visits whether a disease or a regular medical check-up. Most mothers always say “no need,” another set of eyes and ears is always a good idea at a doctor’s visit. The best part? This one is free. Gift No. 2 Help your mother organize all of her medical records, which include the test results and medical information. Put them all in one place. Be sure to make a list of all of her medicines and what times she takes them. “Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mother’s life,” Dr. Marie Savard said. Gift No. 3 Enough sleep is connected to general health conditions. “Buy your mother cotton sheets and fortable pillows to encourage better sleep,” Savard said. “We know that good sleep is very important to our health.” Gift No. 4 Some gift panies such as Presents for Purpose allow you to pay it forward this Mother’s Day by picking gifts in which 10 percent of the price you pay goes to a charity (慈善機(jī)構(gòu)). Gift givers can choose from a wide variety of useful but inexpensive things—many of which are “green”— and then choose a meaningful charity from a list. It’s a trip we look forward to because autumn brings new natural colors. After a summer of staying in the garden, it can be refreshing to get out of the city and enjoy the natural beauty. We usually visit the tiny village of Balmaha, where many things are on sale. The area is part of Loch Lomond and the Trossaches National Park is a visitor center in Balmaha, which also marks the start of the path for Conic Hill. This is one of our favorite family-friendly hills as it can be pleted in two hours. Balmaha boatyard runs trips to the villages of Luss and Balloch. You can also take a waterbus to the nearby island of Inchcailloch, which is covered by woods and a heaven for wildlife. The island has three paths, two of which are suitable for young children, and a picnic area with toilets. We also love driving a few miles along the shore from Balmaha to Rowardennan. The West Highland Way passes through this area, which is located at the foot of Ben Lomond. There are a number of clearly marked walking paths to choose from. During the autumn months there’s a real sense of peace as you walk alone through the oak trees. There are a few places to hire canoes, row boats and bikes in the area. The eastern shore of Loch Lomond is one of my family’s favorite escapes and an ideal place to walk, camp, picnic and recharge our batteries before the short, dark days of winter. Before the trip we often spend time discussing what we each want to do and what we want to get from our time away from the daily life. The visit to Loch Lomond is something I hope we will continue for many years to e. 12. Why does the author like to visit Balmaha every year? A. Because he has many friends living there. B. When trying to municate through a language barrier, it’s natural to use gestures as a way of explaining your point. We think it’s helpful, since our words will be strengthened. 16 For example, the thumbs-up sign is equal to the middle finger in Greece. Tapping your finger to your temple(鬢角) is a gesture to show memory in North America, but suggests insanity(精神錯(cuò)亂) in Russia. 17 The yes-no gestures are opposite in countries like Bulgaria and Albania. Silence. Though it can feel like an emptiness in munication, silence can be very meaningful in different cultures. Western cultures, especially North America and the UK, tend to consider silence as disagreement. In some interactions at work, school, or with friends, silence is often regarded as a sign of disinterests. In other cultures, however, silence is not viewed as a negative meanings. 18 Touch. Britain is classed as a “non-contact” country, in which there’s very little physical contact in people’s daily interactions. 19 By parison, in the high-contact cultures of the Middle East, physical touch is a big part of social life. Eye Contact. 20 We think that a conversation partner who looks away is either indifferent or lying. Of course, this is not a standard around the world. A. Language learners will put a lot of time into learning gestures. B. However, the wrong gesture can make people confused. C. In China, silence can be used to show agreement. D.
