Critics call her one of the greatest writers of our time. Lucille Clifton was born in Depew, New York in 1936. She began writing poetry when She was about ten years old. She had developed an interest in poetry because of her mother,Thelma Sayles. Her mother was also a poet although her poems were never published. As a child Lucille would sit on her mothers lap and listen as she read poetry. She learned to love words and the power of words. That stayed with her as she grew. While her mother taught her to love poetry, her father gave her the gift of storytelling. He would tell Lucille interesting stories about her ancestors, especially the one named Lucille who was his grandmother. Samuel Clifton said she was the first black woman to be legally hanged in the state of Virginia. Lucille Clifton wrote about it in her poem called “Lucy”. Lucille often talked about her love for words. She loved the sound of words and the way the words felt in her mouth. She loved finding interesting ways to use words to express what was happening in the world. Unlike her mother, Lucille Cliftons poetry is anything but traditional. Her poems do not rhyme or follow a special kind of pattern. They do not use fancy words. Her poetry is known for being simple, truthful and direct. It is written the way people speak, in a casual (隨意的), relaxed language. There is very little punctuation and even less capitalization. Many of the poems are unfortably honest. Lucille Clifton often said that she tried to fort the afflicted(折磨) and afflict the fortable. Over the years, she seems to have perfected that art. D。 21. What can be learned from the passage? A. Lucilles parents influenced her a lot. B. Why is it that decades later it still stands out in your mind? Probably the main reason is that some aspect of that poem resonates (引起共鳴) with you. In the same way, you too as a school leader can touch the hearts of your staff and students. Poetry allows us to experience strong spiritual connections to things around us and to the past. Thus, it can inspire whatever and whomever it touches. The power that poetry has displayed over time and across cultures actually satisfies this_mon_need of the human heart and soul. As one of the oldest art forms, poetry has successfully connected various strands of humanity(人性) from one generation to another. Referring to poetry, Hillyer makes a simple yet meaningful statement, “With this key mankind unlocked his heart.” School leaders can find and make use of the value of poetry for themselves, their students and their staff members. Beyond the simple use of poetry, techniques of poetry such as metaphors, repetitions and imagery can be used to take advantage of the power of language to transform munication, create meaning and a culture of care and attention. Since schools are mainly about people and relationships, school leaders, like poets, are required to inspire and encourage the human heart. The use of poetry—or even of some techniques of poetry—in school leadership not only helps to improve munication, but also serves to meet the human need for inspiration. 25.Who is the passage mainly for? A. they are easy to understand B. they usually tell true stories C. they can inspire peoples imagination D. they can touch peoples hearts 答案:D 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。 27.The underlined part“this mon need”in the second paragraph refers to ________. A. the need to read poetry B. the need to be inspired C. the need to learn about the past D. the need to be connected with other people 答案:B 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第二段第二句的“...it can inspire whatever and whomever it touches.”以及文章末句話中的“...serves to meet the human need for inspiration.” C In recent years, yoga(瑜珈)has bee popular with people for its fitness. Because of the focus on the physical aspects of yoga, like postures and breathing, few people realize that they are taking part in an ancient practice, developing from Indian religion. Yoga originated in India in the sixth century B.C., when people were trying to answer questions about the nature of the self and the soul. It started as a practice only done by ascetics(僧人). So it was not something that the average people did. Yoga is not only a physical practice but also a mental practice, designed to reduce the focus on the external(外部), said Whitney Sanford, professor of religious studies. Most people pay much attention to daily existence and as a result, they lead busy lives, while yoga provides people with a technique to cut off their devotion to the external. Samantha Tam said that practicing yoga improved her flexibility and treated her injuries. “Every time after practicing yoga, I always felt really relaxed and was in a good mood,”she said. Yoga was probably introduced on a popular level in America in the 1960s and 1970s, when Western people began to show curiosity about other religions. Now most people pursue yoga to relieve stress, and fair numbers of people are simply curious. 28.According to the passage, yoga was originally performed for______. A.its fitness B.relaxed and healthy life C.religious reasons D.the need of the soul 答案:C 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第一段最后一句“...they are taking part in an ancient practice, developing from Indian religion”以及第二段第二句中“It started as a practice only done by ascetics”可推測(cè)人們最初練瑜珈是因?yàn)樽诮痰脑颉? 29.Yoga is the following EXCEPT________. A.a(chǎn) physical practice B.a(chǎn) mental practice C.a(chǎn) way of paying attention to the external D.a(chǎn) way of reduing the focus on the external 答案:C 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。 30.Today, people do yoga for many reasons EXCEPT______. A.to get rid of stress B.to treat injuries C.to satisfy their curiosity D.to bee a hindu(印度人) 答案:D 細(xì)節(jié)推斷題。 31.What would be the best title for the passage? A.Yoga, an Indian religion, now attacks American culture. B.Yoga, originally a religious practice, now popular for its fitness. C.A good way to practice ones postures and breathing. D.Pursue yoga, learn about Indian religion. D For a 400yearold art form, opera had a bad fame: overweight actresses singing the words which were hard to understand in one of those romance languages you were supposed to learn in high school. And with tickets costing as much as $145 a performance, opera goers also had a certain appearance in peoples mind: rich, welldressed and old. But now opera panies around the country are loosening_their_ties_and_kicking_off_their_shoes in an attempt to keep opera alive and take it to a younger and not so wealthy audience. Opera producers have found that to attract this crowd, they need to associate opera with the mon people. That means no formal suits, oldstyled theatre or bankbreaking ticket prices. And because young people dont or wont e to the opera, panies are bringing the opera to them, giving performances in such usual places as parks, libraries and public schools. The Houston Grand Operas choice is the public library, where it performs “mobile operas”, shortened versions of childfriendly operas. This summers production is Hansel & Gretel. By performing smaller versions of large productions, producers are able to make people interested while keeping costs at a reasonable level. The San Francisco Opera, which will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, is staging Cinderella free of charge, keeping costs down by employing students from its Young Artists Training Program. 32.Which is the main idea of this passage? A. Opera is famous for its long history. B. Opera is only performed for rich people. C. Opera panies are trying to keep opera alive. D. Young people are not interested in opera. 根據(jù)短文后三段得知,講的是有關(guān)歌劇公司決心拯救歌劇(keep opera alive)的行動(dòng)以及具體措施(associate opera with the mon people)。 33. The underlined phrase in the second paragraph means ________. A. breaking up the old rules B. changing the dresses C. making the audience at ease D. advertising themselves 答案:A 語意理解題。 34.Opera panies prefer to perform short versions because ________. A. they can be performed in public libraries B. short versions are easy to perform C. it is hard to find long versions D. they can make people interested 答案:D 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第四段第三句話“...producers are able to make people interested...” 35.The San Francisco Opera employs students in order to ________. A. celebrate its 75th anniversary B. reduce the costs C. attract young people D. make Cinderella popular 答案:B 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)全文最后一句“...keeping costs down by employing students from its Young Artists Training Program”得知答案。 Every day we meet people in a number of business and social situations. __36__ Its important to do so in a proper way, no matter whether you are introducing yourself to someone, or introducing two people to each other.
