30 years ago,I was rocking my baby boy in my arms. 1 My wife was half asleep and half watching TV in the living room.I poured myself a glass of iced tea in the kitchen, and walked into the front yard. 2 On the hill next to our house the neighbor’s children were running after fireflies(螢火蟲),hoping to catch one in a jar.I sat down in my chair and watched them for a while. As fast as they could run, though, they couldn’t seem to catch the slow moving lighting insects. Finally, tired, they sat down in the grass and just watched the little guys flying through the air, flashing their light on and off. 3 It felt so good getting to see one of nature’s many miracles (奇跡)lighting up my front yard on a warm summer night. Over the years since then I have appreciated and enjoyed all of the wonderful light in this world. 4 I have found it in nature, books, music, animals, prayer, and most of all in the lives of those around me.I have never tried to catch this light, however.I have learned that true light and true love must e from within. 5 A.Let them remind you to shine your own light as well. B.When he fell asleep I put him gently down for a good night. C.I have taken it into my heart and weled it into my soul. D.I slowly drank my tea and joined them in their appreciation. E.They must flow freely between us and cannot be caught in a jar. F.The next time you see some fireflies, take a seat and enjoy their light. G.As soon as I stepped onto the yard I heard the sweet sound of laughter. B Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning,a middle, and an end with mercials thrown in every three or four minutes. 1 They happen whether you want them or not.Every couple of minutes a billboard passes by outside the bus window.“Buy Super Clean Toothpaste.”“Drink Good Wet Root Beer.” “Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television off,are you spared the unending cry of “You Need It!Buy It Now!” The beginning of the ride is fortable and somewhat exciting, even if you’ve traveled that way before. 2 It is also fun to try to figure out the style of the driver. 3 Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right,or the left-hand lane? After a while,of course, the excitement dies down. 4 And food makes this part of bus rides more interesting. But you’ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat.Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops. The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there’s a kind of expectation and excitement. 5 By now you’ve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the armrests, and even with your hands behind your head. The end es just at no more ways to sit. A.Usually some things have changed:new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. B.Each part has its own characteristic. C.The mercials are unavoidable. D.Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. E.The seat,of course, has bee harder as the hours have passed. F.It is so boring that you need something to refresh you. G.If the driver is particularly adventurous, the ride can be as thrilling as an exciting story. C On Friday, the Ministry of Education, along with eight other central departments, published a document on preventing campus violence. The document stresses that if the perpetrators(作惡者) break the law they should be handed over to the police. 1 As early as May,it launched a campaign to deal with the issue. 2 Several cases have even aroused nationwide concern. The root problem lies in some schools insisting on punishing the perpetrators with campus rules instead of calling the police, even though some incidents have already broken the law and the perpetrators should face legal punishments. 3 The schools do not want the perpetrators to go to court because it may harm their reputations so they prefer to “forget the bad things”. 4 The problem is,the more they try to hide, the bigger their scandal(丑聞)is. 5 When the students who treat their schoolmates violently get extremely light punishments because of their young age, they might mit serious crimes in the future. Such cases should arouse our concern. It is time to solve the problem of campus violence with rules of law. A.Yet campus violence is still quite wild. B.The punishments of the schools are,of course, much lighter than legal punishments. C.Schools must be aware of the consequences of bullying and violent incidents in schools. D.This is not the first time that the ministry has introduced measures aimed at stopping campus violence. E.They think that by turning a blind eye to any wrong doing that happens on campus, they can cheat everybody. F.Worse,by trying to hide the scandal instead of solving it,the schools have actually encouraged campus violence. G.Students with severe behavioral problems should be transferred to special schools suitable to their needs or receive criminal punishments. It is important that you teach your baby to read as young as possible. Why? Because there is simply no better time in a child’s life for learning than when they are between 3 months old and their 5th birthday. 1 As a result, they are sponges(海綿) for knowledge. Moreover, being able to read is the basis for any successful education,so the earlier they start, the better. All too often, parents leave educating their children up to schools, which probably explains why the United States is currently ranked 18th in its rate of reading and writing. Teaching your baby to read provides brain exercise during the very time when his or her brain is developing. It has also been shown to increase the baby’s IQ.The sooner they begin to read, the sooner they can begin to learn other subjects. This way,by the time your children begin school, they will have already known what’s being taught, and will be put on the fast track. 2 One of the cases that really began to bring the fact that babies can learn to read to the public’s attention was 17-month-old Elizabeth Barrett. 3 She was given a series of words and even sentences that she could read quite well. Her parents had been reading to her since she was born and had provided her with a very early education. Reading is the most important thing to teach babies at a young age. 4 Learning can be fun at such an early age,and it can be acplished so easily that they won’t have to struggle in order to learn. In fact, when you use the proper materials, they will look forward to learning. If you’re interested in teaching your baby to read, the best way to start is by spending just a few minutes a day. 5 Simply show your baby matching pictures on the opposite side. There are also videos that help to teach babies to read. There is no better time to teach your baby to read than the present.Begin by looking for learning materials that your baby might enjoy. A.Flash cards are an effective tool. B.She appeared on the Today Show. C.Maybe they will even skip a grade down the road. D.During this time, their brains are developing rapidly. E.What’s more, your child will be able to read so successfully. F.It doesn’t have to be stressful or difficult for your child though. G.Parents talk about the pride that their children can read at an early age. 故B項符合語境,he指代上文中的“my baby boy”。 2.G 上一段提到“walked into the front yard”,故G項與之呼應(yīng)。 3.D 上文提到孩子們捉不到螢火蟲后坐在草地上看著一閃一閃的螢火蟲漫天飛舞,下文提到“It felt so good getting to see one of nature’s many miracles (奇跡)lighting up my front yard on a warm summer night.” 且C項中的it指的就是上文中的“all of the wonderful light in this world”。 4.D 該空是一個過渡句,承接上段的“After a while,of course, the excitement dies down.” 3.B B項中的“The punishments of the schools”與本段“punishing the perpetrators with campus rules instead of calling the police”相呼應(yīng)。 1.D 根據(jù)前一句可知,因為在孩子的學(xué)習(xí)生活中,沒有比在3個月到5歲之間更好的時間,與D項的“During this time”相呼應(yīng),所以選D項。 3.B 根據(jù)“She was given a series of words and even sentences that she could read quite well.”
