One day,a pottery collector suggested that the artist add more children to her Singing Mother figures.She immediately thought of her grandfather,Santiago Quintana.She liked the idea because,as she said,“There were always lots of us grandchildren around him.” So,in 1964,the first Storyteller figure was born.
The first piece she made was a grandfather sitting,with five children around him.Each child had a different facial expression.The grandfather’s mouth was wide open.So many people wanted the figures that she gave up her other artwork to work on the Storytellers.
To make her figures,Mrs.Cordero preferred the brown clay (黏土) of her hometown,and often walked a long way to collect it.She talked to the tiny figures in an effort to put her own “happy,special feeling” into every character she created.
Mrs.Cordero was always surprised that her Storytellers were enjoyed by so many people.But her admirers (贊賞者) know why her work is so well liked.She was an excellent artist who refused to take shortcuts.She once said,“To make good pottery,you have to do it the right way,the old way.”

Look around the walls of your classroom.Do you see pictures or paintings?Most of the art on show was probably created by yourself and your classmates,using imagination and your own hands.
Each year in Toronto thousands of school children make the best use of their imaginations and their creative abilities in workshops provided by an organization called the Inner City Angels.These children work directly with professional (專業(yè)的) artists on different art programs.
Natalie McHaffie is one of the many professional artists who work with the Inner City Angels.“My purpose is to teach the children about design,” she says.“Once they learn how to put things together,they can use that knowledge for other things they may want to do,such as making a kite or designing a house.”
Recently Ms McHaffie worked with 16 children at St.Bernard School to create a wall painting in the hallway leading to the kindergarten classroom.Together they designed and did the wall painting during one school week.
