The week-long meeting, organized by the World Meteorological Organization, aims to help nations cope with climate change by improving the way climate information is collected and shared among governments. Scientists predict the world will get hotter over the coming decades. A major conference in Copenhagen at the end of the year will focus on ways to mitigate the worst affects of global warming. It will present measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions(排放)to slow this process. But, the World Meteorological Organization says mitigation alone is not enough. Largely overlooked in this process is the need for adaptation. WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud says countries must have the tools to adapt to a changing climate. They must be able to respond to a world that is likely to experience more extreme weather events, such as floods and hurricanes. "For the health sector, it will be to be ready to cope with a disease, which will spread in areas where they do not spread or which may become more serious," he said. He says global warming is likely to increase the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. Therefore, better and more timely information on these phenomena are essential to make decisions on climate variability and change. To do this, he says, weather observation networks must be strengthened. The WMO chief says climate change is a global problem. And, everyone needs everyone else to solve this problem. He says even the biggest, richest countries cannot do it alone. He says the developed world needs reliable weather information from developing countries and vice-versa. 1. About 65% of Americans said they have sleeping problems a few nights each week, according to a recent study by the National Sleep Foundation. Sleeping too little can lead to a higher risk of becoming fat and getting depressed(沮喪的). But before you go to a doctor for advice, it is worth examining your sleeping habits one more time. Some of your favorite evening habits may have something to do with the sleeping problems. Setting a Bright Alarm Clock The light of your bright alarm clock can prevent you from falling asleep. You can make your room as dark as possible. Cover the bright numbers with a book or consider buying a small travel clock. Your cellphone alarm may also do the trick. Counting Sheep When you just can’t fall asleep, it’s useless to stay in bed to count sheep. If you’ve been trying to fall asleep for more than 30 minutes, the National Sleep Foundation suggests you get up to do some reading or watch TV for a while. Such activities will make you sleepy. Before you know it, you’ll be going back to bed really tired. Exercising Late at Night? Daytime workouts(鍛煉) will keep you full of energy for hours. That’s why you don’t want to exercise within three hours of hitting the sack. Fierce(劇烈的) physical activity raise your body temperature and pumps your energy level—both are bad for a good night’s sleep. 6. What can we learn from the first sentence of the passage? A. It’s not good to fail to fall asleep at night. B. People in a good company often have sleeping problems. C. There are many people who have sleeping problems. D. You should find someone to talk to if you can’t fall asleep. 7. The underlined part “hitting the sack” in the last paragraph means “______”. A. going back home B. going to bed C. going to the gym D. falling asleep 8. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. The bad results of getting too little sleep. B. Why the bright alarm clock keeps you awake. C. What to do if you can’t fall asleep after 30 minutes. D. Why watching TV and reading books make people sleepy. 9. By writing the passage, the writer mainly wants to tell us _______. A. why so many people can’t sleep well at night. B. how to enjoy a good night’s sleep. C. that sleeping problems are troubling more and more people. D. that people may solve their sleeping problems by some habits. C Let’s face it. No one drinks diet soda for the taste. People drink diet soda in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn’t drink diet soda. “What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,” said Sharon Fowler. The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, continuing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly l0 years. While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations. Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet soda, they don’t lose weight at all. “We weren’t seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us,” said Rogers. So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet, but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet soda, and so over-compensate (過(guò)度補(bǔ)償) for the missing calories. A related study found some sweeteners (甜味劑) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. “Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion (推廣) of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky,” said Helen P. Hazuda, professor at the University of Texas’s school of medicine. “They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.” 10. People drink diet soda to _____________. A. enjoy its taste B. stay in fashion C. gain more energy D. achieve weight loss 11. The new study suggests that drinking diet soda _________________. A. makes people much thinner B. helps people to be healthier C. causes people to become heavier D. offers people more calories 12. We can learn from the passage that ____________________. A. regular soda makes people lose more weight B. diet soda does help reduce calories C. diet soda drinkers tend to eat more food D. most blood diseases come from diet soda 13. The underlined word “They” in the last paragraph probably refers to ___________. A. sweeteners B. diet sodas and artificial sweeteners C. sodas D. diet soda drinkers and sweetener takers Dear friends, As we can see, the environment around us is getting worse and worse.
