Here are some tips on how to improve reading skills. 8 Tips to Improve Reading Skills 1. You don’t have to be a great reader to get the point. Some people read fast and remember everything. Others read slowly and take a couple of times to get all the information. It doesn’t matter, really, so long as when you read, you get the information you’re seeking. 2. Know why you’re reading. Are you reading for entertainment or to learn something? Decide why you’re reading before you start and you’ll greatly improve your prehension and your enjoyment. 3. You don’t need to read everything. Not every magazine, letter, and email you receive contains information you need. In fact, most of it is simply junk. Throw it away, hit the delete key! Just doing this will double the amount of time you have available to read. 4. You don’t need to read all of what you do read. Do you read every article of every magazine, every chapter of every book? If so, you’re probably spending a lot of time reading stuff you don’t need. Be choosy: select the chapters and articles that are important. Ignore the rest. 5. Scan before you read. Look at the table of contents, index, topic headers, photo captions, etc. These will help you determine if, a) you have a real interest in this reading, and b) what information you’re likely to get from it. 6. Focus. Remember, you’re reading with a purpose, so focus on that purpose and the material. If you lose interest or keep losing your place, take a break or read something else. You can keep track of where you are by following along with your finger. This simple technique helps you focus and increase your concentration. 7. Practice. The more you read, the better reader you’ll bee (and smarter, too)! So, feed your mind: read! 8. Optimize your reading environment. You’ll read faster and prehend more if you read in an environment that’s fortable for you. For more reading skills, you can click here. 21. Scanning such things as the table of contents can ________________. A. relax a reader if he gets tired of reading the material B. improve one’s ability to gain more useful information C. take a reader a couple of times to get all the information D. help a reader decide if he has a taste for the reading material 22. How can a reader focus and increase his concentration while reading according to the passage? A. By pointing at what he is reading. B. By underlining what he is reading. C. By reading the material aloud. D. By sticking to what he is reading. 23. As is mentioned in the passage, _______________ may influence one’s reading. A. intelligence B. environment C. information D. speed 24. Where is the passage most probably taken from? A. Textbook. B. Magazine. C. Newspaper. D. Website. B My grandmother often said to me, “You can count the number of your true friends on the fingers of one hand.” For a long time I thought this was true. However, I’ve now discovered my grandmother was only half right. Maybe we do only make a few “best” friends in our lifetime, but those aren’t the only people that we can call friends. There are many different types. Let me tell you about a few of them. One type of friends is the type I call the “football mom friend”. My neighbor Sally is a good example. We both have kids who play football in a football club, and someone has to take them to practice and pick them up. Sally and I and two other mothers take turns to do this. We meet sometimes and have tea and talk about what our kids are doing, but those are the only times that we meet each other. I enjoy being with these women, but we don’t do anything else together. Another type is called the “hobby friend”. That’s the person you share an interest or a hobby with. Michael and Cater, who are brothers, are a good example of this type. We’re all in a bird watching club. Every few weekends the members of the club go on a trip to watch different kinds of birds. There’s nothing romantic(浪漫的)about my relationship with Michael and Cater, of course. We just share interest in birds. Then there’s the “other half of the couple” type of friends. Jim is married to Rose, a friend that I’ve known since college. When Rose married Jim, I realized that I would have to be Jim’s friend if I want to continue to be Rose’s. Jim and I don’t share so many interests, but we do have a friendly relationship. 25. What does the first paragraph tell us about? A. We need true friends in our lifetime. B. We have few best friends in our lifetime. C. We should make new friends. D. We must be friendly to all our friends. 26. Many people are mentioned in this passage. Who is the writer’s true friend? A. Sally. B. Michael. C. Jim. D. Rose. 27. Which of the following statements is RIGHT? A. Finally the writer agrees with her grandmother. B. Michael and Cater both fall in love with the writer. C. The writer herself sometimes takes her kid to the football club. D. Sally and the writer are close friends. 28. From the last paragraph we learn that ________. A. the writer made friends with Jim only because of Rose B. Jim was the writer’s good friend at college C. Rose didn’t want the writer to be a friend of her husband D. the writer made friends with Rose because of Jim C Three men were travelling across the desert when their car broke down. There were no other traffics, so their only hope was to walk. Before they set off, they looked around in the car for useful things to take with them. One of the men took a bottle of whisky. Another took an umbrella. The third unscrewed a door from the car and carried that. After they had been walking for almost a day, they came across a camel caravan travelling towards them. “Let’s try to join the caravan,” one of the men said. “It’s going the wrong way but we’ll be safer than if we keep on alone across the desert.” The others agreed, so they asked the leader of the caravan for permission to join it. “You can join the caravan only if you answer three questions,” he said. He pointed to the first man’s bottle. “What is that and why are you carrying it?” he asked. “It’s a bottle of whisky. I decided to carry it with me so that if I feel miserable and want to give up, I can get drunk, cheer myself up and then keep on walking.” “Very sensible,” the leader of the caravan said. Then he pointed to the next man and his umbrella. “It hasn’t rained in the desert for many years,” he said. “Why are you carrying an umbrella?” “I don’t want to get heat exhaustion,” he replied. “The umbrella will give me shade from the sun.” “Very sensible,” the leader of the caravan said. He pointed to the third man and his car door. “And why are you carrying a car door?” he asked him. “I thought that if I got too hot I could open the window and let some air in,” he explained. 29. What happened to the three men’s car? A. It fell over a cliff. B It had an accident. C It stopped and wouldn’t start again. D They exchanged it for another one. 30. Each of the men took ________. A. something to eat B something to drink C something to keep the rain off D something to use on their walk 31. They decided to ________. A. travel with the caravan B buy a caravan C rent the caravan D put the caravan together 32. They asked the leader of the caravan ________. A. if they could join the caravan B how to get out of the desert C how to avoid heat exhaustion D where he kept his umbrella D It was almost the worst birthday of Abraham Lincoln’s life. On February 11, 1861 (the day before he turned fifty-two), Lincoln left for Washington to bee the nation’s sixteenth President. As he left home in Springfield, Illinois, Lincoln handed his son Robert a black oilskin bag, and told him to keep it carefully. He did not tell Robert what was inside. Unknown to his seventeen-year-old son, Lincoln’s newly written inaugural speech had been placed his in the bag. It was to be the most important speech he ever made. And it was his only copy. When the train arrived in Indianapolis — the first stop on the long journey — Lincoln rode off in a special car without his family. Robert walked from the station to the local hotel. When Robert arrived at the hotel, he learned that his family’s rooms were not ready. So he asked that the bag should be held at the front desk. Then he went off to be with friends. On his return, Robert found his father waiting anxiously. Where was the bag? Robert explained that he had checked it at the desk. An angry Lincoln sped to the hall and leaped over the front desk. He began searching through a huge pile of luggage. As puzzled guests looked on, Lincoln dragged from the pile a familiar-looking black bag and opened it, only to find someone else’s dirty clothes. It was the wrong bag. Back he went to the pile. At last he found the valuable bag and the speech inside. Lincoln handed it to his son and said strictly, “Now you keep it!” It was the one and only time, Robert said, that his father had ever lost his temper at him. But with his speech found and his birthday yet to be celebrated, Abraham Lincoln grew cheerful. As Robert proudly recalled, “Father did not scold(責罵).” 33. The underlined words “inaugural speech” in Paragraph 2 may refer to ______. A. a speech made to a school B. a speech written by Lincoln’s secretary C. a speech to take office of President D. a speech made to the whole nation 34. Lincoln gave his newly written inaugural speech to Robert in order to ______. A. take the train to Indianapolis B. let Robert keep an eye on it C. ask Robert to have a read D. have Robert make a copy of it 35. Robert realized the importance of the bag when ______. Here are some practical suggestions for studying effectively, overing anxiety, and learning the grammar and skills necessary for success in foreign language classes. 36 Language learning is cumulative(積累): you cannot put it off until the weekend. Study one or two hours for every class hour if you want a good mark. Distribute(分配)your study time in 15 to 30 minutes period throughout the day Study a different task each time: vocabulary now, grammar next, etc. Get an overview during half an hour: spend 10 minutes reviewing conversations, 10 minutes learning new vocabulary, 10 minutes learning new grammar… 37 About 80% of your study time should be spent on recitation(背誦) or practice. Take part in every class --- even if you aren’t well prepared 38 Learn the grammar and vocabulary outside of class in order to make full use of the class time. Spend a few minutes “warming up” before each class by speaking or reading the language. Make yourself fortable in the classroom Get to know your classmates, so you’ll feel you’re among friends. 39 For example: you explain your goals and fears about the course to your teacher. Learn grammar if you don’t already know it Grammar is the skeleton(骨架) and the basic structure of a language, and you must learn it. Practice for tests by doing what you’ll have to do on the test If the test will require you to write, then study by writing--including spelling and accents. 40 Ask for practice questions and make up your own test questions. Try to invent changes on patterns and forms. Over learning is also required in tests preparation: study beyond the paints of recognition to mastery. Develop a good attitude Have a clear personal reason for taking the class. Set personal goals for what you want to learn. Leave perfectionism at the door; give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn from them. A. Study every day. B. Have more practice in listening. C. So you’ll at least have looked at it all. D. If you’re asked to listen, practice listening. E. Class time is your best opportunity to practice. F. Visit your teacher during office hours to get acquainted (熟悉的). G. The more you study, the higher mark you will get. 第三部分 英語知識運用 (共兩節(jié),滿分45分) 第一節(jié) 完形填空(共20小題;每小題1.5分,滿分30分) 閱讀下面短文,從短文后各題所給的四個選項(A、B、C 和 D)中,選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。 A gray sweater hung on Tommy’s empty desk, a reminder of the sad boy who had just followed his classmates out of our third – grade room.
